6/12 ~ Saying Goodbye to NYC

1995 USAIDS 5,000
Post #13:
Saying goodbye to NYC was not easy; but before leaving, we had a couple pieces of business to attend to. In addition to visiting Stonewall, where the bartender stripped off his shirt (at Carl Lebman's demand) presenting it to me; we also took pictures from our suite at NY Palace, and from the Today Show Line. (Each picture has more details.)

This is St. Patrick's Cathedral, between 4th & 5th Ave. in Manhattan, and this view was from our suite in the New York Palace. The brochure prices listed $850 for our suite, in 1995. The Royal Family of Malaysia had recently purchased the property from Leona Helmsley. They sent a message to AIDS Service Center, offering us a place to stay. I arrived, all hot & sweaty, bicycle in hand, and was halted by men in 3-piece suits, insisting, "Sir, you are in the wrong place." Escorting me back outside, I told them of our message. After verifying it at the front desk; an entourage of workers greeted us, with great apologies. We were told to enjoy our stay, without cost, without gratuitous tipping, including parking of the car. When Carl Lebman and I arrived to our room, the Dream Machine was already parked there on 2" white shag carpeting. P.s. I'm not showing you the 12 ft. bedstead or the all glass shower-room.

You might read part of my hand-written notes from the picture album, between the two photos, "Begging on TODAY". This was taken by the interview line for the Today Show. I was granted a brief live TV interview with Al Roker, and he allowed us to show this banner from the back of the support vehicle. I had taken Sunday off for much needed rest, thanks to Incentra. We were starting a new week of begging, lol. (Picture from Monday, June 12, 1995)
